The fundamental problem with the AFK cloaker

Posted on 18:00 by Unknown
EVE players hate few things more than AFK cloakers. AFK cloakers do exactly what their name implies: cloak up and go AFK. Doesn’t look too dangerous, right? But still, a single AFK cloaker can shut down PvE in a nullsec system and spawn countless of threads that demands CCP to somehow make AFK cloaking impossible. I never cared for AFK cloaking. Actually I never cared for who is in local channel both in my highsec trading/hauling and my nullsec fleet flying. I might checked if local spiked, but a single hostile was always ignored. Why do other people care about AFK cloakers?

I found the solution when I started AFK cloaking myself to break “white knights” who protect the miners from ganking. Considering that you can’t gank while AFK, I was totally harmless in this state, yet my actions were enough to make the good socials give up on their noble quest of defending the innocent. Later I analyzed that their problem is that they depend on skill instead of proper doctrines.

From these I could figure out what is fundamentally wrong about AFK cloaking: the activities were based on "security trough obscurity" and the AFK cloaker breaks obscurity. Let me explain it with an example: if you announce where and when you will rat in a Nyx, you’ll lose that Nyx in a day or two. The rational conclusion from this fact is that ratting in a Nyx is a bad idea. Still many people rat in Nyxes when no one is in local, because if no one knows that he is doing it, he can get away with it. The AFK cloaker can know therefore his presence denies you the ability to rat in Nyx.

However your problem isn’t the AFK cloaker. Your problem is that you are trying to do something stupid that will end up with a disaster if anyone figures out. But obscurity isn’t the only solution. The other solution is not doing stupid. If you are ratting in an omni-tanked, non-blinged, insured T1 battleship you can ignore the AFK cloaker. It’s very unlikely that someone forms a fleet for killing it. If some random roaming punk comes, you have good chance to kill him or at least get away while ECM drones disable tackle. Using the battleship is a stable solution, therefore it can work when discovered. Using a Nyx is an unstable solution which can only work if no one knows. Similarly, mining in a Procurer or an empty-pod, insured, 18K EHP Retriever are stable solutions, you can ignore your surroundings, your doctrine guarantees that you won’t get into trouble, even if dozens of ganking Goons are in local. Mining in Mackinaws with valuable pods under white knight protection is an unstable solution and only works while the knights are on top of their game, which they can’t be 24/7, hence they rely on knowing the small windows where gankers are hunting. My AFK cloaking broke just that.

I turn the above back: "if you care about AFK cloakers or local channel, you are doing something you shouldn't". For example ratting in a too expensive and PvP unable ship, mining in untanked ships, botting, hauling too expensive cargo, flying what you can’t afford to lose or do some other dumb stunt that you know would fail if anyone would figure it out.

So instead of whining about AFK cloakers or staying docked while hostiles are in local, how about fixing your actions, so they can work in spite of hostiles? I literally hauled several billions trough Narja and Uedama with dozens of Miniluv on local, camping the very gate I jumped trough. I didn’t care because my ship wasn’t a dumb freighter. Of course the fix is maybe not something you like. For example highsec miners should use tanked ships instead of max yield Mackinaws. But they want the yield, so they keep doing it, relying on white knights or setting known gankers to red and watching local (when they aren’t AFK). Smaller alliances that cannot protect their assets should abandon nullsec or join a coalition. But they want the “ima null pvpr lol” badge, that they try get some ISK when no one is looking. Then they go cry on the forum when a 100K SP Rifter pilot with a prototype cloak shuts their op down. Their problem isn’t the AFK cloaker but the fact that they are practically ninja-ratting in their "own" Sov.

Bad players have skill, good players have doctrines

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
The war for Finanar made me look up my PvP kills, aka the ones where the target had guns:
  • White knight frig, 3M
  • Revenge for my pod, 20M
  • Finanar Manticore and its pod, 310M
  • Nakugard Tornado 100M
  • Finanar Hookbill and its pod, 29M
  • Hek Algos, 5M
  • Old Trasher, 18M
  • Ares with an inappropriate pod, 1290M
All together 1774M.

The killboard recorded 520 ship losses and 3 pod losses, but most of them are just miner drones getting on the Concord mail. I can't tell how many of them are actual kills (when the gank was prevented), let's guess 10%, if you want a more exact figure, go and dig into my killboard and find the losses which aren't paired with ganks. As a Catalysts can be a 3M meta fit or a 10M T2 and fittings are often recovered, let's go with 6M losses. That's 300M from the 50 Catas, + 350M from the three pods (I thought you can't lose pods and went crazy on the second pod, my new pod is much cheaper). This is 73% ISK efficiency.

If I was a hypocrite like most, I could tell that I'm not a ganker, just reinforcing belts to get good fights from the owner. But since I don't give this good fights nonsense, the consensus is I don't know anything about "real PvP". Considering my lack of PvP skills, my solo PvP ISK ratio is pretty high, especially all these kills were against people who willingly engaged me, knowing what I fly and having Concord and faction police on their side. How could I win instead of being massacred by any "real PvP-er" who cared to hunt me? Because they trusted in "skill". Sirlin wrote long ago how scrubs worship the unmeasurable skill: "The scrub has still more crutches. He talks a great deal about skill and how he has skill whereas other players—very much including the ones who beat him flat out—do not have skill. The confusion here is what skill actually is. In Street Fighter, scrubs often cling to combos as a measure of skill. A combo is a sequence of moves that is unblockable if the first move hits. Combos can be very elaborate and very difficult to pull off. But single moves can also take skill, according to the scrub. The dragon punch or uppercut in Street Fighter is performed by holding the joystick toward the opponent, then down, then diagonally down and toward as the player presses a punch button. This movement must be completed within a fraction of a second, and though there is leeway, it must be executed fairly accurately. Ask any scrub and they will tell you that a dragon punch is a skill move.".

Actually this magical "skill" is "human effort" or "precision of moves". To catch a Catalyst, you have to camp and then perform the necessary moves fast and accurately. If it's done perfectly, you win. This is how scrubs imagine winning. How play-to-win people do win is simply "getting the results". Once upon a time in EVE there were "elite alliances" which demanded good killboard from their members and were proud of their "skill". They were smashed by F1 pushing self-declared bad players in Drakes.

What did these "bad players" have? A doctrine of ships. "Doctrine" can be explained as non-human power source. A typical doctrine ship needs no more "skill" than anchoring up and pressing F1 on the broadcast target. No human perfection needed, the ship does the job by its superior power/ISK ratio. The suicide gank doctrine ship is a Catalyst. It's perfect for it's job, it's easy to fly and most importantly it's very cheap to lose. If we go back to my PvP stats, I lost approximately 50 ships to my enemies and got only 8 kills. Yet I came on top on the measurable objectives because my ship is so cheap. You might say that my kills were inflated by the too expensive pods of the enemy, but that's the very point: they willingly engaged in their expensive pod because they trusted their "skill". I don't. After I was proven to be not "skilled" enough to keep my pod safe, I changed my doctrine to work with a much cheaper pod. I know that I will lose it again and mitigated the damage. They didn't - because they have skill and don't need such "cheap" moves.

Of course every doctrine has a counter (unless the game is unbalanced). The Catalyst has a very easy counter: the Procurer, the Skiff and the empty-pod 18K+ EHP Retriever. These cannot be profitably defeated by Catalysts, no matter how "skilled" one is. Winners adapt their doctrines when faced with problems. Losers just try harder, believing that with enough practice they can get enough "skill" to overcome. Sure, you can teach your whole fleet how to fly their Rokhs to never be bombed. Or you can just switch to Megas. Guess which option worked on the field.

Many miners rely on "skill" to avoid being ganked. They watch local or even Dscan and flee the belts when gank comes. As this needs human effort, they constantly has to be at the keyboard, which makes using Retrievers and Mackinaws pointless at the first place. Also such "skilled play" can easily be defeated by the "cheap" move of AFK cloaking. If they want to wait until I go offline, they are up to a long wait, like these 8!!! white knights waiting for my looter to go suspect. They are still waiting I guess:

Instead of anti-tears, today I post why I need other people in my corp: because I can't gank it all by myself. And we can agree that this thing (and the 5 similarly fit Macks) must die:
I've seen them in Gamis, Delerik if you are interested. While I'm sure this bunch will be slaughtered by someone soon, there must be lot of others! Join and let's kill them all!

Corporations/guilds only have their restrictions to offer

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Each MMOs have player groups. Guilds, clans, corporations. Why to join them? The answer seems obvious: because these groups control resources: a successful WoW raiding guild can get you heroic epic items, a sov-holder EVE alliance can provide you access to jump bridges, stations, reimbursements and blob kill reports. They all give a collection of players who will help you in various things.

However this is a dumb answer. The corporations and guilds have no resources. Every item, station and piece of currency is claimed by the members. Unless you join to be a leech/thief at the first place, you will work for your own stuff. I mean as all resources are created by members and distributed to members, the average member gets exactly as much as he gives, by definition of the term "average". It is true that often the form of contribution is different from the form of reward. For example the typical EVE Nullsec alliance pilot contributes his time flying in a fleet that capture moons and rented space and he receives ship reimbursements. But such specialization is done without formal grouping in highsec by trading: you run missions that give ISK and LP and can trade the LP shop items for minerals that others mined.

If not resources, then maybe it's "friends". The groups facilitate positive interaction between a subset of players. However such groups could be created by game mechanics too and such attempts are not successful. The NPC corp in EVE has no corp life and the "Looking for Dungeon/Raid" feature is considered a horrible social experience suffered only for the extra rewards. Considering that these features connect you to a sample of the playerbase, collecting another sample of the same playerbase should provide exactly the same result: annoyance.

"But my corp/guild isn't just random players" - you might say and you are right. Not everyone can get into your group. Since your group is a subset of the playerbase, the only thing the group can do is set restrictions. For example a HC raider WoW guild only recruit people who can keep 95%+ raid attendance, have X ilvl and Y bosses killed. In EVE Pandemic Legion only takes you if you have a carrier and decent killboard history. These are all restrictions, locking out large segment of the playerbase.

The restrictions the group looks negative to the player at first glance: "I can do X, Y and Z in the NPC crop, if I join this group, I will be banned from doing Y and Z". Why does anyone submit to such restrictions? Because he gets something important: groupmembers who are similarly restricted. Joe might want to do X, V and W. Since you don't like V and find W especially disgusting, you can't play with Joe in an unstructured environment. But you can both join a group which bans Y, Z, V and W, letting you do only X which you both like. The only thing that the gaming groups have to to offer is a set of restrictions that ban other players from activities that would harm/annoy you.

This came up when comments questioned what my corp has to offer besides restrictive rules? The answer is - just like for every other EVE corp is: nothing. Restrictive rules are all I have to offer. Let me explain these rules from a "what do I get" perspective:
  • Provide 5B worth of solo highsec ganks every month. This rule guarantees that every other member is a seasoned ganker. If you see an Orca that needs 8 Catalysts to gank, you can form a fleet of 8 without having to worry that someone sits in a T1 cata, cannot overheat, has his safety green or fails in some other way. You, just need to do your job, they will do theirs.
  • Zero nullsec, lowsec or WH kills. Killboard is a simple way of measuring activity and performance. But it has the technical problem of giving every killer the full value of the kill. If you had a noobship in Asakai, you could get nearly a trillion ISK kills by your civilian guns. This rule guarantee that the killboard data of the other members are not inflated by such killmail whoring.
  • The corp chat is for sharing kills, asking questions, discussing strategies, trading equipment and forming fleets against whales. Not for jokes, stories, "funny" picture links or other random crap. This guarantees that the corp chat will never turn into something you'd like to turn off, it won't be spammed by irrelevant nonsense and it's not ignored by everyone but trolls. If you ask a question, you get an answer and not trolling and lols.
  • Teach! This is why we are here. Your bio should contain teaching (see example below), you should link the kill on local channel to alert others, and to send them to your bio. It guarantees that others are doing the job too, so the goal of changing EVE is reachable, it's not just you against the legion of morons and slackers.
  • Be self sufficient, don't beg for ships or modules! This guarantees that no one leeches on you.
Many people think that such restrictions make the game not fun. Which is the point! These people don't belong to the corp and the only way to keep them out is making the game not fun for them if they still join. I want to find people whose fun is not limited by these rules - on the contrary, their fun would be damaged by the activities I've banned: non-performance, kill-whoring, idle chat, porn links, griefing people and begging.

While I claim that every single game group works this way, I do not claim that they use formalized rules. They often run by "we are a friendly group, join and let's have fun". Here the limits are set by actions of the leadership, what they do, what they tolerate and what they don't. This is what's dubbed as "the personality of the leader matters". I could run the same corp without written rules, simply by constantly bitching on kill-whores, yelling on porn-spammers celebrating performers and trolling beggars. I simply prefer a formalized ruleset instead of "unwritten rules".

The main positive of written rules is less noise. No one will join here who doesn't belong. The main negative is harder start. By having a generic "join and have fun", you can collect filler people to make the corp lively and active, make the impression that it's not a "start from zero". I terminated my business, focused all my efforts here, I'm here for the long run, I am fine if the corp will be very small for months.

I seriously hope that people will find this kind of play desirable. I find it desirable, I don't find my play limited by the rules above. Unless I'm one-of-a-kind, the corp won't be empty. It is very likely that 99% of the players would find this corp not fun. But considering that there are about 200K players in EVE, I still have 2K prospective members. To get them in, all I need is to stick to these rules and prove that I mean them.

PS: for the first time I started scanning. Mining barges. I just love my new scout Tengu. I also tested that you can't be ganked in a mining mission as the ganker arrives at the mission entrance even if the scout is standing next to you. A ganky catalyst can't just travel 10+ km because the police drones attack it if it's below -5 security status.

You can't really grief in EVE

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Many people did not understand my point with ridiculing the Goon Ice Interdiction. They linked the Miniluv killboard as a proof that they do gank a lot. I do not question that. What I disproved is their ability to grief.

In PvP games destroying the game items (pixels) of opposing players is normal gameplay. It's just normal to shoot members of the opposing team in an FPS game, this is how you win the match. No one gets mad at you. The term "griefing" refers to pointlessly harming random players, just to make them sad while receiving no in-game rewards. The Goons claim to be such griefers who "drink pubbie tears". Let's look at their killboard since the start of the interdiction!

Day Mackinaw, Hulk, Covetor Retriever Skiff, Procurer Orca, Freighter
Sunday 53 21 2 10
Monday 21 15 0 5
Tuesday 17 17 0 5
Wednesday 16 20 0 0
Thursday 10 21 0 5

From the mining ships, only two died from the kind I suggested, and their fits were horrible: the Skiff had no afterburner, the Procurer had no Damage Control. Retrievers probably earned their pricetag before dying, as that's what retrievers do, though it was probably a bad idea to use them during a campaign. The largest losses came from ships I explicitly called "not belong to highsec". Pods? Since highsec has no bubbles, no pods shall die. If you can't warp it out, you were AFK. Don't be AFK with a valuable clone!

Let's check the whales, Orcas and freighters:
  1. (Sunday)No DCII, cargo rigs.
  2. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  3. 5B Freighter, unrelated to highsec ice.
  4. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  5. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  6. 1.5B Charon in belt.
  7. 1.5B Charon in belt.
  8. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  9. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  10. No DCII, drone rigs.
  11. (Monday)1.4B Charon in belt.
  12. 1.5B Charon in belt.
  13. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  14. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  15. 9B Jump Freighter, unrelated to highsec ice.
  16. (Tuesday)No DCII, cargo rigs.
  17. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  18. 1.5B Charon in belt.
  19. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  20. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  21. (Thursday)No DCII, cargo rigs.
  22. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  23. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  24. No DCII, cargo rigs.
  25. No DCII, cargo rigs.
Besides unrelated kills that greatly boost the Miniluv kill ISK, the interesting thing is not a single big ship died which wasn't completely stupid. Flying an Orca without Damage Control II or putting a freighter, especially the weakest tanked Charon to the belt are both idiotic moves. The interdiction killed only idiotic ships and it doesn't matter how many of them died. They shouldn't have been there at the first place!

EVE is a spaceship PvP game. Shooting spaceships for their loot or killboard value is not griefing, it's playing EVE. Griefing would be shooting ships at loss just because you can. This is what griefers claim to do: "we just want lulz and tears, we don't give a damn" they say, but the above data shows it's a big fat lie. The truth is "we look for easy pickings to pad our killboard". There is no shame in that, killboard numbers are a valid form of "winning EVE". However there is no griefing involved. The killers did the smart thing and got rewarded.

The point is that the myth being at the mercy of unstoppable griefers is a lie. If you are in a properly chosen and properly fit ship, you won't die to Goons or any other "griefer". My earlier post proves that they can't really kill you at loss even if they really-really want. I'm probably the most controversial guy in EVE. Every post of mine in EN24 gets hundreds of haters. Yet I wasn't "griefed" once in one and a half year of playing EVE, despite I was literally asking for it and went directly to the biggest "griefing" campaigns.

What you need to understand in EVE is that your fate is completely in your hands and not in the hands of even the "mighty" Goons. By choosing the proper ship and clone, learning basic moves and fitting your ship right, you cannot be harmed.

OK, that's probably obvious to those who are informed. But what about the rest? People come to EVE and get "griefed out". Why? Because they are bad in the game and no one teaches them. On the contrary, everyone lie to them, claiming that they can't do anything against a "powerful griefer" or that they need "powerful friends to protect them". No wonder they leave the game, who would want to play when he is just a toy of older players? Of course they could figure out that it's a lie, but most people are socials who believe what other people say and also naturally believe that people and not things matter. Their social attitude makes it hard for them to seek solutions in ships and fittings instead of in "friends".

The power of griefers comes from the ignorance of socials. It's time to break this. It's time to make EVE a nice and newbie-friendly place without griefing. To do so, I terminated my business, liquidated every assets (not complete yet). I planned to earn money forever to support a nullsec alliance and fly titans but those aren't important compared to what I found here. My wealth is enough to play this way for decades without making a single ISK. So hereby I announce my crusade against "griefing" and the lie "you need friends to succeed" and call you to join!

On Monday I will post the details of corp. Today I just outline our way: we will gank. We gank miners, missioners, haulers, autopilot-travellers. We pod whoever we can. But instead of harvesting their tears or giving them self-enlarging lies ("i haz skillz", "i haz freinds"), we teach them. Our bio, our corp details, our mails and our chat will all teach them to seek power in nothing but knowledge: how to choose their ships and how to fit them. We will be the living vaccine against griefing. Next time Goons come to "grief" they shall find no Mackinaws and Hulks, just competent players. How is our "good gank" better than the "bad grief gang"? The griefer says "you died because you suck and I own" while our slogan will be "Your ship sucked, not you!".

Get into Catalysts people, the most noble cause of cleansing EVE from dumbness, ignorance and social thinking awaits! The corp details and recruitment rules come at Monday, but I already found out the name:

PS: this is the DPS of a proper ganky Catalyst, not 300 like that T1 crap Miniluv flies:

The donation board is recognition

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Donations in MMOs aren't new and clearly not I invented them. When I started playing WoW, there were already punks begging for "1G plox" in general channel (local in EVE). Despite its ruthless nature, EVE had its donations pretty often, just think of the Angel project.

What I invented is the very thing why commenters hate me so much. Just check any of my post republished on EN24. Hundreds of comments throwing insults and hate without any kind of argument. Why? I mean if my post was just bad, it would be ignored. There are many bad bloggers out there and they are all famous for ... nothing. They don't get visitors, because no one likes to read crap. They don't get links as they aren't interesting. They mumble alone and slowly give up and stop. If I was one of them, I wouldn't attract hate, I'd attract nobody.

The reason of the hate can be summarized in a comment given by someone posting under the tag "mynnna" (I can't verify his identity, but the comment is interesting on its own): "Except for the parts where, you know, reality. The parts where they [the renters] don't expect recognition or to be lauded for and fawned over for their contributions, and the part where we wouldn't anyway."

Recognition. This is the key. I'm not the first "carebear" blogging or posting on forums. But I'm the first who expect recognition for being a carebear instead of humbly asking permission to live. I'm the first who challenge the status quo where a frigroaming idiot belongs to a higher class than any carebear. Before me, no one questioned that carebears are at the bottom of the food chain, they only exist as content for the people who "get EVE". I was the first who pointed out that the oh-so-mighty nullsec alliances are dirt poor, their income/capita would make a newbie miner laugh, and they are flying the cheapest crap in the game because they can't afford better. While all carebears reject PvP, I was the first who did not do so with fear or moralization (they are mean, I'm not mean!) but with laughter: look at the poor losers brawling in crap ships!

I'm far from being the first carebear going nullsec. Actually all nullsec players who don't buy PLEX from CCP for their ISK are carebears, since ISK must be farmed. However I was the first who boldly kept carebearing on his main, instead of yelling "I'm a PvP-er, let's kill mining publords for fun" while running 4 Retrievers on the other screen. I'm the first carebear who did not live in self-hate and secrecy, but stood out and said: "I'm a carebear and not ashamed of it. You should be ashamed for that bombless bomber or T1 cruiser you fly."

TEST alliance, probably out of desperation did as I asked: gave recognition to carebears. For two weeks we could be the saviors of TEST. We had our killboard-like toplist, we could be proud of what we did. And we repaid this recognition with money eclipsing regions of moons or renters. For that I'm grateful for TEST. Why did the donations stop? Because TEST leadership proved itself unworthy of managing our money (like with having directors steal, awox and quit).

Sooner or later a nullsec group will overcome the self-enlarging lie "we are awesome just because we do PvP, even if our PvP is just being smartbombed by R&K" and give the "carebears" recognition, welcome them into their alliance for being carebears. This alliance will be able to throw away dread fleets like Talwars. That day the Goons will either adapt and do the same, removing the last bit of "being a Goon" or will be swept away. One by one their pets will switch sides and finally everything they built will be destroyed and they'll only be mentioned as BoB now: as a bad joke from the past. Oh wait. They are already a bad joke.

PS: I think I solved the awox problem too (a carebear/fleetbear corp must have wide recruitment, so easy entrance for awoxers). The corp is not in the alliance, but set light blue (enough for fleet access) and awoxers (who can't be kicked since don't log out) will be set individually -10 by the alliance so they show up as reds. They also lose their docking rights in alliance space (and the corp has no stations). The renters set the corp itself to red and bears are told not to go to renter space or the designated "ratting space for members". Ratters can also set the corp red to avoid awoxing, if they are careless and don't switch it back when they leave the ratting space, they pay reimbursement. This way the members of the bearcorp can't awox anyone else than other bears but since we make our ISK in highsec alts, it's not a problem.

Roleplaying "bros": the source of ALL drama

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
You wouldn't rob a stranger. You would definitely not kill a stranger just against boredom. You wouldn't rob the safe of your corporation. You wouldn't shoot your coworkers even if it was legal. Similarly, if faced with evil ones, you wouldn't attack them with blazing guns against odds. You wouldn't give a large sum to a young person just because he is an adorable newbie. You would definitely not work for your employer without payment.

You are neither a mass murderer, nor a saint. You are an ordinary person who plays a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, where your avatar is a villain or hero. A spaceship pilot, a dragon slayer, an orc or some other weird thing.

But some people take the game too seriously. Things happen to their avatar in-game, and they act like it happened to them, in real life. The internet is full of people raging over a game. People who post angry rants. And people who quit over something that happened to their avatar.

I was thinking about this, reading the parting words of a prominent member of the MMO group I play with. He was upset because another leadership member was removed due to inactivity: "people are all `Hey this is what you should expect because you were unavailable etc etc.` Sure, if we were a Fortune 500 company or even if we paid X some real life salary, I would agree. But let me tell you what the reality of this is. X is someone who has devoted ungodly amounts of time to this alliance over the past 18 months or so. X done this all for practically nothing".

This is absolutely wrong. X spent "ungodly amounts of time" in a video game. The reward for playing a game cannot be anything else than enjoying the game and maybe learning something from it. If such things didn't happen, then it was time badly spent. You can't expect other real life people reward you for playing a game.

Within the game, X roleplayed a director in a company. This avatar stopped doing the director duties and was removed. This happened in the game, according to the logic of the roleplayed world. Would you fire a friend of yours for being unavailable for a few weeks, for serious family matters? Of course not, you would probably help him with these matters.

But the sad truth is that we aren't friends. Our avatars are friends. We are roleplaying being bros, standing side by side till the bitter end against the evil spaceship empire. You, the person, the player, can expect nothing else from the fellow players than what laws, EULA and human decency demands. Things like "don't threaten him with IRL violence or call him a [racist homophobic slurs]". You definitely can't expect gratitude for playing the same video game.

Drama starts when someone perceives that his friends betrayed his trust. In the game our avatars are friends and one can betray the other. The other can retaliate in-game by hunting him down, getting him kicked from groups, and so on. But you, the player has absolutely no reason to be upset. The other guy beyond the avatar was never your friend. He was a random player whose avatar happened to come to the circles of your avatar. Thinking that random player as friend is just as crazy as performing violent crime against a player whose avatar violenced yours in the game.

Clarification: I'm not against statements like "he did so much for the alliance that he deserves X reward". Many people devote serious resources to help out in-game groups. But it must be understood as "he given up time spent roaming or time spent farming ISK for the alliance" and not "he given up real life time for his alliance". For a non-player family member "FC-ing in Asakai" and "running lvl4s in highsec alone" are both classified as "sitting at his computer playing EVE".

"Separate but equal"

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Why to resist CFC? Why to lose Fountain when all we had to do is to bow to Mittens and keep it as CFC members? Why throw away HBC and pick up the "rebel" gimmick?

There are several alliances in the CFC. Formally they are equal. No one calls them pets inside. But, despite shared jabber, mumble and fleets, they are in separate alliances. "Separate but equal" was the legal justification of the Jim Crow laws which prescribed separate "white" and "colored" rail cars, restaurants, barber shops, pubs, schools, drinking fountains and practically all places. Legally they were equal, practically very much not. The "colored" versions were always worse, even when there were attempts to provide equal services. The reason for that is simple: the white users were generally of higher status, and they could leverage this for better services. For example an "only white" restaurant could charge higher on average, therefore hire more staff, providing better services than a "colored", even when the individual customers had equal requests and money. This was the basis of the ruling overturning "separate but equal" stating that separation necessarily lead to inferior services to colored.

Even if there are honest attempts from CFC leadership to keep them equal, the pets get inferior treatment, due to the important figures mostly being Goons, and they naturally look after their people, while pets don't get this attention. However I doubt if there are even attempts. From time to time we here this or that alliance kicked from CFC for "underperformance". However Goonwaffe members don't even have to comply to formal standards. The position of the line Goon is safe without doing anything, by his "birthright" of coming from SA. On the other hand if a pet doesn't perform properly, he is punished. GSF had half as many troops to 6VDT than TEST, despite equal size. Will anyone has to fear consequences of this pathetic performance?

This creates and inequity between the line members of the core group and the pets. The legendary line was "you don't talk back to -A-", instead of "you don't talk back to Makalu". Makalu was a leader who had reasons to demand respect. But a line -A- was just as much an F1-basher as a line "pet". Yet, he was treated better, just like white men over "colored".

The CFC is in the state of the pre-emancipation society of institutionalized racism. There are "white" Goons and "colored" others. This is why TEST broke away from Goon pet state and kept fighting alone against the 3x bigger CFC. Being chased to Esoteria or Impass is better than being a pet.

It was asked if Tribe is a TEST pet? Since Tribe clearly cannot defend itself without TEST or from TEST, it holds its land only at the will of TEST. So Tribe had to do its best protecting TEST space, while cannot automatically expect the same. In this sense, yes, Tribe is a pet. The fact that TEST members and leaders never purposefully wronged them doesn't change that. Human rights needs to be guaranteed by systems and not the goodness of the power holders. If you read TEST forums, you will find a suggestion from me to offer them alliance merge, exactly to stop this situation and make them one with us, change the "separate but equal" into "mixed". Hell, I changed my forum signature to "Can we merge with TRIBE? We already fight as one, let's be one!"

If you are a member of a stable coalition (as opposed to a temporary cooperation of separate entities, like BL and PL at Asakai), and the leadership isn't from your group, you are a pet. Maybe a well-treated one, but still a pet. They might even "jokingly" use the N-word or other racist/sexist slurs on you. It is not funny. Not at all.

Rational self-interest in donation

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Giving out donations doesn't look too rational. Actually it looks pretty leftist and socialist. The strong shall carry the weak. The thing I hate most.

First, you have to see that real life welfare gives money to support a lazy person to continue to do nothing. If you donate to NASA for example, you can rightfully expect that they spend it on researching space. It is possible that some (or all) of your donation is stolen. However there is a large chance that it will be consumed for a goal you wanted to support.

Now let's look at EVE Online and the donation system at TEST. You want to win the war, that's your goal. If it's not, then you shouldn't be in an entity fighting that war. If your goal is getting lot of money, your place is in highsec where no one bothers you with anything else than making money.

Now, let's see what 30B can buy for you in regards of DPS/HPS and EHP:
"Power" is EHP*DPS*(1+1/n)/2, because if a ship has 2x higher EHP, it causes 2x more damage. The 1/n is there to count for the fact that a Nyx losing 90% of his EHP is still shooting with 100%, while a fleet shoots with 10% after losing 90% of the ships.

You get the picture: the same money gets more and more powerful fleets as you get into smaller but more numerous ships. Of course you can't bring in 30000 Rifters since you lack the pilots. Also, below a size the fleet become too easy to be bombed. However bringing in 99 rifters + 1 Nyx is definitely weaker fleet than 100 Rokhs. Therefore if you can guarantee that your money is spent on other pilot flying in combat (as opposed to him ratting less at your expense), you are better off keeping the other guy in ships than upshipping yourself. The SRP guarantees that, he can't get your money any other way than losing his in the war.

Of course one can ask why I should donate for the SRP of the other guy when we are supposed to be equals: simple, I am more motivated than him. He is clearly more casual on this war thing. Push him to contribute equally and he stops logging in. On the other hand the victory will be more rewarding to the one who is motivated, than to the one who just jumped on a fleet doesn't really caring where it goes. But keep in mind: no matter how little he gives, he still gives to the alliance. He gets nothing for himself from the SRP.

The various "free ship" programs (besides the trivial-cost ones to fresh newbies), are trickier, since you can easily hand out someone a new ratting carrier that he'll lose to some gang. People quitting EVE after getting their first titan are infamous. In such cases, I'd rather pay them salary for being on capital op than giving them a capital.

Since the donation board was created, TEST collected 270B. In less than a week. If you want to support us in our holy crusade against the Band of Bees, just send money to Upvote (executor corp of TEST) and put "donation" to the description.

I'd like to emphasize how different this war is from all previous: they were won by one of the sides losing morale, stop logging in or leadership turning on each other. Neither CFC, nor TEST can end these ways. They are not "elite" alliances that define themselves on green killboard or "l33t skills", they just laugh on whelps (not so much on stand-downs). They both have a central corp that gives 50%+ of the strength of the alliances, these can't fracture like BL/NC. did in the North. These wars will continue until one side simple lose too much money to field capitals, allowing the enemy to grind down structures in no time, degrading the enemy into a "Pizza-state". This war will be decided by finances and not propaganda.

Some Fountain war photos. The fleets are usually running around reinforcing and repping things. On the first fleet I was in a Guardian, repping the SBUs:

We also shot some towers, with dreads as decent people do:

My second fleet was less entertaining:
A Prophecy fleet where I was in an Oneiros. We had no dreads. This shall not stand. We must raise enough money to put dreads to every reinforce op.

Beyond my wildest dreams

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
"Beyond my wildest dreams" is a new gimmick in TEST, coined by an awoxer who stole a smartbomb from the fleet hangar of a titan and awoxed some retrievers. He explained his actions as the value of the loot was beyond his wildest dreams and couldn't resist it.

For more than a year I was suggesting that alliances should finance themselves on player contribution. I mean players already donate huge amount of time to their alliances, like flying stealthless-bombless stealth bombers grinding structures. If 200 people flying such crap for 2 hours without personal benefit is OK, 200 people ratting/mining and giving away the income (200*2*0.05 = 20B) should be equally OK.

But it's not, because shooting an IHUB is awesome PvP fun, while mining is a horrible PvE activity that only carebears do. And no self-respecting PvP-er would tolerate filthy carebears in his alliance. Goons surely not who gave the order to their pet SMA to kick half of their members for being carebears. TEST is probably the only exception, with official squads for industry and ratting and people openly discussing ISK-making.

I recently rejoined TEST and suggested to have a killboard-like toplist for donators. It was built in record time. You can see it too, it's not passworded, it's open like the killboard. So, I offered 10B every month if they make it and foolishly offered to match any donations.

I expected people to give a couple ten millions. After all 1000 people donating one hour of ratting fruits is 50B. Corps may give a billion or two. Well, the results exceeded my wildest dreams. Members gave billions with ottawolf donating his whole saving for a supercarrier, 40B. Matching that was felt even by my wallet. Anyway, in the first few days of this running, 160B was collected, almost as much as the monthly moon income of Fountain. The list isn't even complete, as many donated goods and not ISK, that needs to be manually added to the system.

This is just the beginning. Lot of people can and like making ISK, they just have no reason to. They farm enough to PLEX their account and buy a ship or two and that's it. Unlike fleet PvP, there was no reward attached. No killboard, no people around to defeat or fly with. Now it became a badge of honor, these "carebears" are keeping the SRP running. Many will pick up their ratting or mining ship, pull out PI pilots out of the mothball or reactivate a highsec moneymaker. Because making ISK is no longer "spending unfun time for pixel money" but the mean to win the war. Also, moneymaking isn't bound to fleet pings, you can do at any time, so it can overall increase activity. Please note that 1/3 of the donated money already came from the "long tail", lot of little guys giving a few millions.

The propaganda of TEST bankruptcy will end just as fast as "N3 is destroyed by the sov-dropping director". TEST can no longer bankrupt. Moons can be taken, members not. As long as there are members loging in, there will be ISK in the chest, therefore there will be SRP. As long as there is SRP, there will be PvP-er to fly them. As the funds increase, more will be available for "get your first battleship for free" or "hourly pay for structure grinders" or free slowcats.

The "Goon idea" has lost the war. Goonswarm may not as they shown fast adaptation skills. Maybe the next Mittani move will be evaluating corps based on ISK given to the war chest and everyone will be expected to recruit carebears. But the idea of "grr carebears, kill them all, PvP forever" is as dead as the master-pet system of BoB and -A-.

If you are not in TEST but want to support us in our sacred war against the Band of Bees, you can donate too:

PS: The donation board will also make the "you just made up your 0.5T" posts pointless. After all, it's irrelevant how much I have. What matters is how do I use it. I think most of it will slowly but surely go to the TEST coffers. Also, my Ragnarok pilot will soon complete his skill plan, so I must get liquid for that too.

PS2, personal note: all services set up and logi pilot joined, stratops here I come again... too bad that most of them are US TZ which I can't attend at weekdays. But there will surely be fleets in the EVE time 16-21 range.

Evidence that playing good has little to do with play time

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Sirlin's "play to win" theory made significant impact in the meta-gaming community, but it's rejected in the wider gaming community. This theory claims that the performance of the player largely depends on his attitude, rather than his playing experience. I expanded this theory by the explanation why there are people who don't play to win: they want to pull stunts that impress real or imaginary peers who want to see sparkles and "ownage" instead of a "boring, cheap" play followed by a "you won" screen.

However the above lacked experimental proof, and without it, the bad players (large majority) can keep claiming that performance is only function of gaming time, dubbed as "no life". The claim is hard to disprove because successful gamers indeed spend lot of time in games. Unsuccessful ones too, but how to catch them? I mean some can be caught by doing extremely time-consuming "achievements", while getting little progress in the main line of the game. However they are a small minority, the large masses cannot be caught playing more than the "no lifers". In absence of accurate time data, anyone can claim that he just "has life" so he doesn't play as much as the other guy. Similarly, if good play is presented, they can simply claim that the performer plays 80 hours a week. Even if someone starts a new game and book his hours, one can easily claim that his previous gaming experience helps, since games are similar. They reached an unbreakable circular argument: anyone who plays good surely plays a lot and playing a lot makes anyone good player.

So I took a different approach. What if I could win while playing bad? I mean if you have "low skillz", you must be a casual. The perfect test-game was League of Legends. It's a pretty grindy (or costy) game, where you battle against other players using units called "champions". There are hundreds of them. They are purposefully unbalanced, every champion has a "counters", champions who can easily defeat it. So the only way to win is to have a large stable of champions so you can always pick one for the job. A champion costs 3-6000 game money and you get about 100-300 for a game if you play for free. Alternatively you can buy one for $15-30. So to have an "OK" collection of champions, you need to play thousands of hours or spend several thousands of USD. Add that the game is fast-paced, so you need to develop muscle-memory for each champions and memorize how to move against each enemy champion. It's easy to say that one must be a no-lifer to win here.

Here I come with nothing like that:
Oops, I played practically one champion. It is a "recommended" one, meant for newbies: weak but easy to handle. To add, I did not even learn the other champions. What does Katarina do? She jumps around and does damage. That's all I know of her. Even less of those who aren't often played by enemies. Add that I have zero experience in RTS games and left WoW raiding for being too fast-paced.

Knows nothing about the game, did not grind gear, moves sloppy: everything is ready for a disaster. And indeed I got insane amount of flame from teammates for being unskilled, noob and a troll just for playing. Yet, it's not them, but me who got this:

Now being in silver league isn't a great thing. I wish to elevate at least to gold, but something very unexpected happened in EVE that will take up my gaming time. You will soon hear about that. Anyway, according to the game wiki, 68% of the players are in bronze. Despite I'm being utterly horrible in the game, I got into the top 1/3. How?

Simply by playing to win, as opposed to trying to kill enemies. The unsuccessful players want to "pwn" enemies to show off their "l33t stats" to peers. I preferred farming NPCs for gold and XP, defending and attacking towers, which are the objectives of the game. Players respawn you know. Most hate I got for completing an objective at the cost of letting a teammate die. That, and helping them which is dubbed as "kill-steal".

The above can be easily repeated, and having some meta-gaming knowledge, I know now that I picked a pretty bad champion as jungling needs teammates to somewhat cooperate, like be defensive when facing a stronger opponent instead of just rushing into the enemy, feeding and spamming "come gank jungler ffs". Some day I might repeat with an easier champion.

The result is that someone with a play-to-win mindset outperforms other players, even if he is utterly incompetent in the game, because most players don't even try to win. A snail easily wins a running race against a rabbit which runs in circles. The bronze players don't need more champions or better reflexes as they already 10x better than me on those fields. They just need to play to win.

PS: please note that there is a "normal game" mode in League of Legends, which is more fun, due to the lack of lengthy pre-battle selection (ban, pick turns, someone quit queue). So the people who picked competitive ranked games are surely attempting to win. They are just failing to.

ur a kid!

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
The title is a troll comment I get often. It doesn't make much sense. It's clearly not an argument. While we know that socials don't bother with arguments, just with insults, butt-kissing and attention seeking, "ur a kid" isn't really an insult.

They seem to genuinely believe that my statements have a special quality that fits to kids. What is this? To the answer, we just have to look another troll comment the "u dun get EVE" (you don't understand EVE). This is pointless on its own, as the commenter never tries to teach me the meaning of EVE.

For a social the point of everything outside of body functions is having positive social emotions. Being loved and/or respected. The "meaning of EVE" what they can't define but are sure that I don't get is "hanging out with friends". In this respect gaining billions, topping the killboard or conquering regions are "meaningless pixels" while running around in frigates and spamming porn and meme links is "awesome fun".

Now back to the kids. Children in the modern world are taught in schools to science, art and professions. They are expected to perform in a rational manner and are measured by numerical scales. So a kid internalizes a moral system where performing well is good and failing is bad. Education is the greatest advancement of mankind and the sole reason of our progression. However, around puberty the kids start to get into "bad company", to peer groups that defy the school norms and claim that having good grades is "no life" and the "fun" is in being intoxicated, engaging in unsafe sex and perpetrating petty crimes.

Since I measure my progress with charts and not by "having fun", I must be a kid who has not been lured by "friends" away from the boring schoolwork into "the fun". In that sense "ur a kid" means "you aren't a dropout", which is actually a compliment.

PS: tomorrow comes the results of a little research, disproving that performing well has nothing to do with "being no-lifer", and performing bad has nothing to do with "being casual".

Why there are no NPC teammates?

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Have you ever wondered why there are no NPCs to hire to do group content? Blizzard just introduced flexible raids to deal with the "group not full" problem, when the solution is so trivial: introduce an NPC that does acceptable DPS and can be hired for raiding. It wouldn't be any good, but better than an empty spot.

In EVE Online it's even more problematic. You see, EVE is a game of alts, I know exactly one player who doesn't have alts in the game (my girlfirend, and she is too casual to matter). CCP games said that the average account/player is above 2, yet there is no officially supported method to multibox. To make it less understandable, setting up a "follower" AI would be like 30 minutes work for a programmer: warping needs no programming as squadwarp is already available, the only coding needed is when the boss jumps or activates warp gate or jump bridge or titan, the follower does the same, upon landing activate tank and propulsion start orbiting its master, lock it up, activate helping modules on it, then attack whatever the master attacks with all offensive modules. Such ship would be much worse than a player as it needs to be capstable with all modules perma-running, couldn't overheat and couldn't attack anything else than the primary of the master. Yet it would be a welcome addition.

The reason of the missing NPC teammates isn't programming, it's a fundamental game-design thing: an NPC teammate would set a barrier of skill for players. I mean a player who is worse than the NPC is rejected from every team, including teams of equally useless players. If a drooling moron starts a team, he will also include NPCs in the hope that they can carry him than taking other drooling morons. Such feature would remove a significant playerbase from the game as they would be outcast and ridiculed as "worse than a dumb NPC". Actually that NPC is just as good for a doctrine fleet than a player, or even better as it's never late, it doesn't spam the chat, won't go AFK, doesn't DC, doesn't mind if asked to stay docked and doesn't jump the gate on arrival when it was explicitly told not to.

While I wrote it would be worse than a player I meant it would be worse than someone who can overheat, warp off when needed, switch targets without orders, keep its position on its own, keep up Ewar on others than primary. Sure, there are such players, but not many, otherwise no one would field F1-bashing fleets that are prone to bombing runs. The pure fact that both sides of the "great 2013 Summer war" use "anchor up, permarun MWD, click broadcast, press F1" fleets prove that the average player isn't far from that very primitive bot. And I'm sure they wouldn't like to find this out the hard way, being devastated by a 50-man corp with each member running 20 accounts, fielding 1000-"men" fleets.

The game companies need human players, so even PvP games go great length to prevent players figure out that they are horrible. World of Warcraft still don't have a built-in damage meter. In EVE there is no way to set up a fair fight, while it's told to be because of the "dark universe", it's actually because it keeps the loser in the game as he can always blame link alts, faction modules or blobbing. In League of Legends the rating system was hidden behind this "bronze-silver-gold..." nonsense, to make sure that the 600 rated moron never finds out that he is indeed a 600 rated moron. I needed to dig to find some source to figure which tier and subtier belongs to which ELO rating and how it translates to ones position in the playerbase (and its numbers don't add up). Even if I failed to search well, the point is that I need to do even more effort to find out how am I performing.

PS: if you know a reliable source that translate League of Legends subtiers to player positions as "silver 4 = top 12%-top 8%", please link.

Why there are oppressive governments everywhere?

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Have you ever asked the above question? I'd be surprised if you didn't. In every generation young people rally for freedom. Be it Woodstock or Occupy Wall Street, it's all about the same: freedom. To let no one tell me how do I live. Of course (most of) them are not idiots and aware of the fact that your freedom will always be limited by the freedom of other people. Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose. Most of them accept this and demands only governmental oppression to end. I mean they accept that they can't just walk to other person's property but they don't accept that some clerk telling them they can't drink, can't smoke weed, can't drive fast, can't sing on the street, can't do this, can't do that, despite no one would get hurt.

The libertarian, objectivist and somewhat the Tea Party and right-wing organizations are demanding the same on a more coherent level. But there is no result. There isn't a country where "clerks" don't tell you when to walk, when to stop, what to wear, who to marry, what to smoke, when to drink and other countless things. The contrary: even countries that were more free are tightening governmental control. They peek into your mail, they strip-search you on the airport, they might even drop a drone on you and kill you with your family if they guess you are up to trouble. And the people in general agree with this.

There were political movements for more freedom but they all failed. Controlled systems simply outcompeted free ones, contrary to objectivist beliefs freedom did not liberated the power of men to create a better world for their self-interest.

I was objectivist longer than average people, way beyond my youth. Most people trade freedom for welfare or nationalism, I'm free of both. I don't think that "unlucky" people deserve help nor I think my countrymen are more my "brothers" than any random human. I've been preaching for self-interest, caring for ourselves, not taking responsibility for anyone else but taking responsibility for ourselves. I simply realized that my self interest demands to allow a "clerk" to decide when can I walk, when can I drink, what speed can I drive, what can I wear and so on.

The reason for this change is playing EVE Online. In this game the freedom one can dream of is available. The GMs don't tell you what to do, there isn't "governmental" punishment for any in-game action. The trailers are true that here only your abilities limit how far you reach: you can be filthy rich, you can be powerful, you can be revered hero.

Socialists believe selfishness is evil. They believe that the "bad" people are those who engage in zero-sum games. I take your money in a scheme, I have money, you don't. They believe that capitalism is a set of zero-sum games and only the good government could protect us from the "greedy capitalist" who doesn't care if he hurt us while he takes what he wants. Capitalist believe that selfish actions are productive to the World, as it's always easier to make a bigger pie and cooperate than take from others, especially as the weak is by definition poor, so you can't really take anything from them.

EVE proves the capitalist dream. The group aren't the pirates or a world conquering army, they are industrialists and traders who create value and serve other people. Our billions come from transportation, price stabilization and the service of providing instant buys and sells. If you look at the ISK-billionaires you can see how wrong the socialists are. I truly believe that any socialist can be converted by making them play EVE.

But I saw something I didn't expect. Something that the objectivist and even the socialist books don't write about. Something that gives a new meaning to the word "evil". It's not the people who ignore suffering. It's the people who want it. Many-many EVE players set out not to gain money or power or fame but to "harvest tears". Other people suffering isn't just something they can live with. It's something they can't live without. Their games aren't zero-sum but negative. They destroy things for no self-interest or even interest in destruction itself. They don't care about the ship they destroy, they do it to make another person sad. Their prize is not ISK or sovereignty but chatlogs proving that someone is angry or sad.

These people cannot be set free. There must always be a clerk who tells them where to go, what to do, what to smoke, what to tell because in the minute they do what they want, they go and hurt people for no reason. Most players gladly trade their freedom, their ability to own stars for the control of CONCORD, because it's easier to live by the rules than constantly fighting griefers who has no other reason to attack than their assumption that I will cry or rage if they succeed.

Of course they are not spawns of the devil, they are simply people on the third level of their development. They realized that the "help the weak" is simply a scheme exploiting them and they want to regain control. Dominating someone gives them the feeling of this control. They aren't evil to be exterminated, they are able to do great things, but to do so they must be kept in check. As long as vast majority of the people are not rational, there must always be a government oppressing these people from doing what they really want: harvest tears.

Damsel in distress

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
From time to time feminists appear on some gaming issue. They are usually right and completely useless in the same time. This time it's about the cliché "Damsel in distress" by Anita Sarkeesian, where the (male) lead character is motivated to save a woman, who is helpless and lost without the strong, powerful man. Is it sexist? Yes it is. Is it disgusting, demeaning and outright wrong towards women? Yes it is. Are the feminists right that it's overused and need to stop? Yes they are. Do feminists make any sense? Never.

I coined the "The Devil is sexist" term when I heard some feminist being outraged that in Africa various militias mass-rape women. What the good feminist forgot that the same militias also killed the women. And the men. And the children. And burned the villages. "The Devil is sexist" term refers to feminists focusing on the sexism of something that is overall terrible and sexism is its smallest issue. Fixing its sexism wouldn't make it much better (would the African women be better off if they wouldn't be raped before slaughtered by machetes?). However focusing on its sexism separates men and women on an issue where they have no conflicting interest.

The "Damsel in distress" cliché in video games is a typical "The Devil is sexist" issue: in contemporary gaming everything is just a tool to advance the story of the player. There is no world in the games (except EVE Online) where players must adapt to and live in. The mock world is forged in a way to adapt to the player. In World of Warcraft, despite it's a multiplayer game, by phasing they made it possible that I am the hero who single handedly stopped multiple horrible evils by my outstanding ability to press any key.

When Blizzard developers quickly needed some new foe, they turned the long-term allies of the players, the Zandalari trolls into a world-conquering evil, so they could reuse the Zul Gurub and Zul Aman instances. Isn't it funny that feminists whine that a female character is abused as story object when whole civilizations are abused? In Mogushan Vaults the poor Zandalari appear again for no other reason than the scriptwriters ran out of ideas. They are introduced as "old allies of the Mogu", so now even their past is twisted, retroactively. We were always at war with Eurasia the Zandalar Tribe.

The sexism of the video games is just a symptom of what's rotten in video games. Other games (like table-top games, sports, puzzles) are designed to have a fixed rule set that the gamers must obey and present a challenge they need to overcome to win. In a usual contemporary video game, the rules are constantly changed in order to make sure that the player - regardless of his merits - always wins and gets what he wants. Could you imagine a "nerf" to the games soccer, American football or basketball where the goal zone (the gate, touchdown zone or basket) is greatly enlarged to make sure that "more casual" players can score?

If a game is designed as "press any key and receive reward", can it not fulfill the immature sexist wishes of boys for a sexy and attractive woman being at their mercy? Can the kidnapped woman escape on her own, practically saying "I'm fine, I don't need you"? No, because like everything in the game her only purpose is to serve the desire of the player to be rewarded for his inadequate and mediocre performance.

However it is still just a consequence. The games aren't made this way by some evil mastermind trying to corrupt the good and healthy youth into a bunch of entitled, leeching punks. They are just following the demand. EVE Online, where the game world doesn't bend to your will and you won't be made the greatest man ever lived for killing 10 rats, have like 100K players (not accounts), World of Warcraft where you literally are, have 100x more (though declining, so probably more nerfs incoming). The sad fact is that the people are indeed a bunch of leeching, non-performing punks who feel entitled to everything including a blowjob from a supermodel. So yes, they are sexist, just like the Devil.

What can the feminists do, besides whining and demanding developers fix it against their financial interests? (It's funny that Sarkeesian doesn't notice that by asking the developers/Holywood to get rid of the sexism she is declaring herself and women in general damsels in distress who can only be saved by the powerful men at the helm of media companies.) There is a famous statement that I might don't remember absolutely correctly:

First they came for the raid difficulty,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a raider.
Then they came for game economy,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't an AH-wizzard.
Then they came for the Zandalari,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a lore nerd.
Then they came for the me, turning me into an E-cup blondie in a cell or a fridge,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

Say no for games that provide rewards for nothing, that bend the game world for the enjoyment of the players, where players are automatically placed into a position of power and entitlement! Just stop giving the makers of these games money!

Give it instead to games where players progress according to their merits. In EVE Online there is absolutely no sexism or even male-normality programmed in. Sure there are horribly sexists morons among the players, since the playerbase is largely the same as of the other games (even if they think otherwise). But you can blow them up. Or rob their group from their goods. I haven't seen horrible behavior on e-sport tournaments, just on the "for fun" games, where you can't really stand out with your performance.

PS to feminists: I don't support your cause not because I consider your views incorrect or your goal a bad one, but because I think sexism isn't an idea at all. It doesn't have theoretical points, scholars or literature. Sexism is the product of "reward/respect me without merit or effort". The typical sexist is also racist, nationalist and hates other religions, simply because he means "I'm in the top 1% of the mankind just because I'm male, white, Christian and member of my nation". The cure is the idea that one can only be rewarded/respected for his actions and in the case of gaming the implementation isn't giving another speech on gender equality but simply pwning his ass in the game. However that's impossible in games where everyone is a winner, and the game company goes an extra mile to reassure him of his awesomeness. So fighting sexism is just as stupid as trying to protect the walls getting black from smoke. I'd rather fight the fire instead.

The true purpose of highsec

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Why is highsec safe and profitable? Why does it exist in EVE Online? What is its purpose? I mean if EVE is a PvP game, we would be better off without it. There is no highsec in World of Tanks. If CCP can't get rid of it since most of the players prefer to live there, the logical move would be to remove the rest of it and turn the game into a huge space-WoW. If most customers are so fond of the safety of highsec, why doesn't CCP get rid of PvP completely and enlarge its playerbase? After all, there aren't many MMOs where players are not represented by a human avatar shooting bullets/spells but as a various of devices (spaceships in EVE), the "be a spaceship instead of a mage" could provide it a niche!

But no, CCP seems to accept something that looks like an unstable situation, like a coin standing on its edge. Yet the coin did not fall to either of its faces over a decade: most players didn't "grew a ball" (how I hate this sexist term) and moved to null where the "big players" are, nor a living highsec community formed. CSM has only one member who somewhat represents highsec, despite the majority lives there.

The answer was provided by a late news piece: Spacemonkey's Alliance, one that is known to have a strong industrialist arm was ordered by The Mittani to cut this arm down and keep only PvP-ers, or be kicked from CFC, therefore its space. This is just one of the countless series of the events when a nullsec entity "cut down the fat" and removed "carebears" from its ranks. But this time it hit an alliance that was famous for calling itself industrialist. They did not look at PvE players as fat and they functioned. Now they got the order: you go full-PvP or go to Hell!

The question is simple: how will the surviving "full-PvP" players pay for their ships? How did the "full-PvP" alliances were to paying for their ships? "Moon money" is bad answer. Tech was used in T2 production and highsec does not consume T2 materials. An item in EVE is consumed when it disappears, either as a used ammunition or as a destroyed ship. While a highsec player might purchase a T2 module, he will sell it back when he upgrades to faction. While he might buys a T2 ship, he will replace it to a T3 or faction one. Besides the Hulks ganked, not much Tech was consumed in highsec. Most of the Tech sold by Goons were blown up the hands of other nullsec, lowsec and WH residents. While Tech might took a trip to Jita, it eventually died outside of Highsec. If it's used outside of highsec, the money for it also came from out of highsec, so the question remains: how can a PvP-er pay for his PvP?

Remember the production-consumption graphs:
The point is not that the value (any item, LP, ISK) is made in highsec, the point is that it's destroyed in nullsec. What is created by "highsec carebears" remains in highsec, either without being destroyed, or ganked in highsec. How do majority of the value go to low/null for destruction? There is only one explanation: alts. The value is created by a highsec "carebear" alt and then gifted to the "PvP-er" main for consumption.

The purpose of highsec is to allow PvP-ers upkeep their PvP-er image. He gives the "fuck carebears, give no shit about ISK, let's just go have some fun pewing" attitude while he runs 3 retrievers and an Orca on the other screen. The selling point of EVE is similar to WoW. While in WoW the skill-less, dumb faceroller is a "hero" who killed all the dragons and has the most epic sword (of the patch), in EVE, the same failplayer is a "no fucks given" badass PvP-er. Everyone can be a badass PvP-er, since he has no reason to give a damn about his ship, it is already replaced by his AFK Retrievers. Take away this secret farm, force them to compete for their resources and they would fail.

What would happen if highsec would be removed from the game? The very opposite of what PvP-ers claim: not the carebears would disappear but the PvP-ers. Sure, in the first week the real carebears would be in trouble adapting. Some would quit. But most would quickly adapt, like those who already did and moved to WH space or doing lowsec exploration. On the first week the PvP-ers would have their feast they've been dreaming of. But after they got popped by other PvP-ers, they couldn't log to their 3 Rets+Orca setup! They would have to do PvE in their space! They would either become carebears themselves, like the WH players, or stop playing. In an EVE with no highsec no one could be pure PvP-er. And without that image, the game couldn't be a massive success. Sure, a small hard core could enjoy the game. But the masses who parade around with their highsec-paid badass life would quit.

Don't believe it? Just suggest on the forum that the welfare system of "insurance" should be removed and watch them scream. Some "no fucks given" dudes!

Why?

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
The question always appears among comments. Being irrational saves others from answering it. "for fun lol" and "whatever feels good" is their answer. They PvP in frigates because it's fun. They roam and kill frigates because it's fun. They fight on Arathi Basin bridge because it's fun.

On the other hand why do I earn money, raided in blues or without fixed group in WoW? What is the point?

We are mortal. We will die. Every single one of us. Despite various priests earn good money making you believe that you'll be living on a cloud with 77 virgins next to a beer river, you'll just cease to exist. In a game it's even faster: stop playing and you cease to exist for the rest of the players. Sure, if you made some impression, people will remember you after your departure. But they are mortal too and sooner or later you'll be forgotten. Everything you were will disappear without a trace.

The ancient Greek scientists like Archimedes perished more than two thousand years ago, yet not forgotten. Why? Not simply because they made an impression with their personal skills (anyone knows who won the ancient Olympic games?) but because their methods were adopted by many people generations after generations. When you use a fan too cool your room, you use an optimized version of the screw of Archimedes, designed to move fluids. The area of a triangle is still calculated by the method set by Pythagoras. The people didn't learn them because of respect or because they were forced to, but because these methods made their life easier. The name of the one who first grabbed a lightning-struck branch and carried to the camp of his tribe could not be remembered due to lack of literacy. But the fire he brought home shaped the life of everyone in that camp and their children and their children's children up to the current generation.

I wish to create replicating and spreading methods of doing things that survive me both in my profession and my hobby: internet gaming. Those who stopped boosting morons and slackers in WoW guilds after reading my blog, play differently due to my effort. They will also drag others to do so and by abandoning the M&S force them to find a new host or stop leeching. I realized and published that the EVE money is in highsec and nullsec is just a ghetto where impoverished youth brawling for street fame. From the fact I have so much haters (instead of just being ignored) it seems many victims stopped serving various manipulators and started to earn ISK and may also think about the social structure of the game itself (will no longer see nullsec fighters as badass kings of space but as brawling punks in a rust-zone block). Those tens of thousands who already read the World of Tanks cheat articles will no longer support a cheater organization and will look more critically to other cheating ones too.

In a month or two, no one will remember that you killed a T3 with a frig. In a year or two, no one will remember that you manipulated a bunch of people into a space empire (how many current EVE players know what "BoB" means, besides "some bad pubbie shit we hate"?) Similarly they will not remember that I killed 52B worth of ships all alone in a month. But they will know that you can get under the guns of a larger ship, leadership is about manipulation and the best way of getting a good killboard is ganking miners. People will be forgotten, but methods will live because they are useful.

What will be left of you after the last man who known you died?
Or less dramatically: what will be left of you in a game when your last buddy stopped playing?

Who are the second group of players?

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
You could see yesterday that the players who go to the Looking for Raid feature do not belong to one kind of group, therefore the performance distribution on the players is not a Gaussian, but the combination of two Gaussians. It's like the height distribution of "pets" where some of the pets are dogs and others are cats.

Let's find them! I dug into the WoW armory and gathered the item level (the power of the gear) of all 496 players belonging to my dataset and plotted the DPS vs their ilvl:

Got a terribly noisy dataset with very weak, 0.316 fitting goodness. But it's not a problem at all, as we aren't here to find the connection between ilvl and DPS but to identify the two distinct groups of players. So I started to identify and successively remove data points that are the farthest from the fitting line.

If a dataset is random, then there are nearly equal amount of points both below and above the line. The graph below shows this balance. Here every removed point was given +1 if it was above the line and -1 if below. If it's random, the resulting line should be a noisy one around zero:

Oops! The 80 most unfitting points are almost all above the line. Among the next 40 worst fitting points, 28 are above the line and 12 below. Let's see where these 120 points are and how the remaining dataset looks like?

You can see that the cleansed data is not only fitting much better, 0.714, but it's direction is changed too, from 0.30X to 0.42X. This is because the removed, one-sided data were not random extremes, but from a distinct group. Now let's see the removed points: 20 of them are below the line, they are simply random extremes of the main group. There is 20 similar above the line. The other 80 above the line points are the ones who don't belong. So let's calculate the mean and stdev of the 80 most unfitting and do the same for the 416 remaining points. Let's compare these results with what we've found yesterday with the fitting of two Gaussians:
Majority average Majority STD Minority average Minority STD Minority ratio
Gaussian fit method 69 20 47 10 21%
Unfitting data method 67 20 53 15 16%

Very good similarity, we seem to have found our two distinct group of players. Below you can see their DPS, Ilvl and number of gearing errors (missing gems, enchants...):
Average DPS Average Ilvl Average gear errors
Majority 67 498 2.9
Minority 53 510 2.2

"Newbies" and "Casuals" are the terms used on bad players, who just "need help". Now look at this: the minority group, who has significantly worse performance have much better gear and less gearing mistakes. They clearly have time to farm gear. They seem to have enough game knowledge to gem and enchant. Yet they perform worse than the majority. Who else they can be than leeching slackers? Like in all socialist system where the "weak" gets help, in MMOs the player groups are intruded by leeches who don't make any effort but get their rewards abusing the other players and the socialist systems. When the Looking for Raid feature was first introduced, below-the-tank leeches were kicked routinely. But Blizzard decided that the "newbies and casuals" deserve help and made kicking very hard. This is the result: AFK-ers, autoattackers and bots.

So we found the biggest factor of success: effort. There are people who try to succeed and others who just whine, blame "luck" and leech on those who pull their weight. And Blizzard forces us to tolerate them! Well, they can't force me, I unsubscribed again and go back to EVE!

PS: the 0.415X in the cleansed dataset means that 1K DPS increase usually means 0.415 ilvl better gear. It does not mean that 0.415 ilvl increase cause 1K DPS increase on average. The DPS is function of more things than Ilvl therefore you can't just form an inverse function this way.
